Letak geografis SMK Negeri 5 Pangalengan berada di dataran tinggi Kecamatan Pangalengan + 30 km dari ibu kota Kabupaten Bandung dan termasuk daerah agraris penghasil pertanian berupa sayur-sayuran dan juga salah satu daerah pemasok susu sapi untuk kebutuhan industri pengolahan susu.
Atas dasar kondisi geografis tersebut, pada tahun 1970 didirikan Sekolah Pertanian Menengah Atas (SPMA). Pada tahun 1975 status SPMA Swasta Pangalengan diubah/ditingkatkan menjadi SPMA Pemerintah Daerah Kabupaten Bandung.
Seiring dengan perkembangan zaman, pada era tahun 1990 minat terhadap pendidikan pertanian mulai menurun, sehingga pada tahun 1995 dibuka Program Studi Peternakan.
Barulah pada tahun 2002 secara resmi diserahterimakan dari Dinas Pertanian Kabupaten Bandung kepada Dinas Pendidikan Kabupaten Bandung dan berubah nama menjadi SMK Negeri 5 Pangalengan, dengan kompetensi keahlian Agribisnis Ternak Ruminansia dan Agribisnis Ternak Unggas.
Melihat peluang di Kecamatan Pangalengan belum ada SMK yang membuka jurusan Bisnis Manajemen, pada tahun 2007 dibuka kompetensi keahlian Pemasaran.
Dengan pengelolaan yang semakin baik ditunjang dengan penyediaan fasilitas belajar yang semakin memadai, serta diraihnya sertifikat ISO 9001:2008 pada tanggal 5 Oktober 2011, animo masyarakat untuk menyekolahkan anaknya ke SMK Negeri 5 Pangalengan dari tahun ke tahun semakin meningkat.
Seiring dengan meningkatnya animo masyarakat untuk menyekolahkan anaknya ke SMK Negeri 5 Pangalengan, maka pada tahun 2017 dibuka kompetensi keahlian baru yaitu Keperawatan Hewan
Tahun Sekarang juga akan membuka Kompetensi Keahlian Baru yaitu Seni Karawitan dan TPHP.
